LED Christmas lights. A bright shiny new thing that held such promise. LED lights last like ten times longer than incandescents and use ways less juice right. Good on the juice, but as far as lasting longer they seem to fail without about the same frequency as incandescents, and also are harder to fix (or I have lo st patience with such ventures). At least incandescents were so cheap as to be almost disposable. Eff B ig Christmas.

I will give you three guesses as to what was going on at Chez “glemon” today, first two don’t count.

I've kind of accepted that each year at least one in 10 strands will be somewhat broken.   Here, I blamed the fact that we get a lot of rain followed by freezing temps during the weeks they're up for shortening the lifespan..

Three of the 5 strands I bought last year are dead. Such BS

You need to buy better LED lights, ie commercial grade. Anything at a box store will be absolute junk. Actionlighting.com and other specialty lighting stores that serve primarily installers are the best bet. Ewing irrigation probably has the best product that can be found in physical stores, albeit at a hefty markup. And these aren’t cheap to begin with... Wehangchristmaslights.com is a good resource for general info.

I use artificial trees and my two pre-lit incandescent trees have been going strong for a decade. I think there are a couple bulbs out on one but I have no idea where I put the spares.

I have a lot of mostly useless pockets of information. Christmas lights happen to be one of the larger ones!

Minleon (brand) SMD (technology) C9 (bulb size) LED bulbs are the absolute best that money can buy, with near perfect viewing from all angles and significantly better output and longevity than anything else.

But again, they’re spendy! Consumer pricing is like $40-60 for 25 bulbs depending on color. And that doesn’t include the socket wire (professionals all buy their wire by the spools and cut/splice them themselves with vampire plugs ). Twelve inch spacing is industry standard for high-end r esidential work, sixteen inch for large commercial work.

That reminds me, better dig out my box of pagan candles so I can join you all in this stupid annual ritual that we all participate it even though it drains savings, causes stress, and endangers lives unnecessarily.

Dang, didn’t know I was going to get an informed response fr LED light dude. I assume a lot of the problems with the cheapo strings aren’t just with the lights themselves, but also with the wires and connections to the lights, plus cheap and indifferent construction.

Still, I expected the indoor lights with their sheltered existence to do a little better.

Ugh, yeah that’s pretty disappointing for indoor lights. I’ve tested quite a few brands in the hopes of finding a lower cost alternative that would be acceptable for entry-level jobs... With no luck. I think you hit the nail on the head with that “cheap and indifferent construction” remark.

Thx, I need to try that... every single LED set I have tried has died in less than two seasons while my ancient c9 string soldier s on and on...

Do it! You probably won’t end up saving any money in the long run , but the lights will look a million times better, and it’s a lot of fun putting everything together!
